This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform advanced diagnostic operations in the automotive retail, service, and repair environment.


In this course, students will learn to diagnose complex system faults, diagnose, and repair electronic spark ignition engine management systems, test, and charge and replace batteries, repair final drive, repair transmissions, conduct non-destructive testing, and skills to manage a team. It includes advanced units for automotive trade people for up-skilling in technologies such as induction systems, engine
design and development, and vehicle handling and stability.

Entry Requirements

This course has the following entry requirements:
International students must:
▪ Be at least 18 years of age on enrolment
▪ IELTS 6.0 or higher with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band Or Equivalent TOEFL (60) or Above, PTE (52), Upper Intermediate or EAP (English Placement Test) provided by IOMT.
▪ Have completed a Year 12 or equivalent high school certificate
Candidates will also be required to complete a pre-enrolment Candidate Self Assessment as part of the application and participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course.

Career Pathways

On successful completion of this qualification, students may progress to AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis or other automotive Certificate IV level qualifications

Course Duration

One (1) year full time
Total Duration: 52 Weeks (including holidays)
Contact Weeks: 20 Weeks

This course will be delivered over a period of 52 weeks (including holidays). Classes will be schedules for 40 weeks over 4 academic terms of 10 weeks each. There will be a 2-week break between the terms and a 6-week holiday end of the year.

Class and workshop sessions are planned to ensure that students have a mixture of practical and theoretical components, and those classes cater for a wide variety of learning styles. Additionally, workplace practices and environments are simulated and used to conduct skills-based assessments in accordance with unit requirements. Classes will be scheduled for 20 hours per week, including workshop work and practice.

Elevate Your Expertise with a Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Technology

This course has the following entry requirements:
▪ Be at least 18 years of age.
▪ IELTS 6 band overall, upper Intermediate or English Placement test provided by IOMT or equivalent.
▪ Those undertaking the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis must have completed an automotive mechanical Certificate III qualification, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency.

Students will also be required to complete pre training review as part of application to determine suitability for the course.

Six months (0.5 Year) full time
Total Duration: 26 Weeks (including holidays)
Contact Weeks: 20 Weeks

This course will be delivered over a period of 26 weeks (including holidays). Classes will be schedules for 20 weeks over 2 academic terms of 10 weeks each. There will be a 2-week break between and end of the terms.
